Tip us or dieee!!!!

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 22, 2008, 6:59 PM

So we just got back from having breakfast/lunch/dinner at this sushi place called New Generation on Bloor.

We'd been there a couple of times before, and the food's decent. It's always crowded, though I'm not sure why since I don't find the place outstanding. The meal was ok, and at the end of it we asked for the bill and paid.

We did not leave a tip. Bad idea.

Wait, before I go on, let me say this - we almost always leave a decent tip. Not huge amounts, but what the average for a tip should be. We didn't feel like leaving a tip today, I didn't find the service outstanding or even impressive for one thing, and secondly, there was a hair in my tofu.

So, before we leave, we get out path blocked by a concerned waiter asking us why we didn't leave a tip (I can't even remember if he was the one that took our order... he got us the bill, yeah, but it might have been someone else who took the orders). The place is crowded silly, so naturally it doesn't look nice. And it's noisy. So he goes something about wanting to know why we didn't leave a tip coz he has to tell his manager if people are unhappy about the service. I tried explaining that it wasn't that the service was bad, it was just not really up to my expectation and I honestly didn't feel like leaving gratuity today. So he goes on about how he'd given us some freebies, which kinda confused me because I figured well, if the restaurant wants to give soup and ice cream on the house, that's the restaurant's deal, not the server's. Anyway, I don't want to say 'your service sucked' (because it didn't suck) but he doesn't seem to want to accept 'well your service wasn't great' either.

Did I mention it's kinda silly standing around trying to discuss the matter in the middle of the place?

So I just plonk down some cash and walk out.

Perhaps I just don't understand because I've never been a waitress, but I was under the impression that gratuity was supposed to be in appreciation of the service you receive at a restaurant. If you don't feel like you've been served right, I don't see the need to leave extras. I suppose you could argue that it's hard to give personal service at a restaurant that's as crowded as that, but then again, diners get as busy if not more so and the one's we go to still treat you like they value your service.

In the end, it's kinda of a shame that that happened, because I'm never going to eat there again. I don't want to go to any place where I feel obliged to have a good explanation as to why I don't want to tip, or feel like I'm being bullied into leaving a tip. I don't want my family or friends to feel like they've been bullied either. I don't know if this is the standard policy with restaurants, to demand an explanation from customers, because this is the first I've had to deal with it. I suppose this is why in some counties they just do away with tipping altogether and have a service charge or something like that instead.

I hope they're happy with their tip. It's the last one they're ever going to get out of me. I'll save my tips for places like People's Foods, where the food is great and the people are nice and reasonable. And where I won't get hairs in my food.

And yeah, if you're thinking of going for sushi at NG, make sure you tip if you don't want to be harassed at the end of your meal.

If it weren't so painful to throw up your meal, I would like to go do that now.

as somebody who once worked as a waitress, i personally feel as though restaurant workers should EARN their tip. it shouldn't be automatically expected and the customer shouldn't be confronted if they didn't tip. if the restaurant feels as though tip is mandatory, then they should include it in the bill.
That's plain stupid. I can't understand where it happened where there was the expectation of a tip.

I worked at a place where we got tipped, a sushi restaurant, and there were numerous times I'd go out of my way for a customer, sometimes a half dozen in the same night, doing special orders, and at the end, no tip.

I was reasonably curious as to why, but, I would NEVER stop someone and ask them why they felt the need not to put their hard earned money on something that is, to me, optional.

People shouldn't be mad if they don't get tipped by anyone. Sure, they do service, and they live off that money, but, I don't think patrons should be under an obligation to tip. Sometimes restaurants include it in the bill. Ridiculous.

It's like when you order a pizza and they tack on a delivery charge, then the pizzy guy asks for tip. What?!?!

I know that tipping is incredibly important in the USA (where the wages of a server are between $2-$3/hour - they're allowed by law to pay them less than minimum wage because it's expected that they'll make it up in tips, which makes them a very important part of their income), but I'm not sure if we do it the same way here. From this guy's reaction it makes me think that it is a similar situation, but I always worked on the assumption that we actually paid our servers a fair wage here. O_o I know that in some European countries, tipping is completely a gratuity, but they're actually paid a living wage, so... *shrug*

On the other hand, it could just be that they feel entitled to the gratuity, so who knows.

I went to a bar one time and spent over 100 bucks drinking with my friends and when we go to our cab to get picked up. A bouncer pokes me in the back and says that we didn't tip. First off he was the smallest bouncer in the world and we were a bunch of drunk focks by that time. So i told him to piss off and said she didn't deserve a tip, is so many ways. Anyways we go to our cab and i turn around and there's at least 20 people outside wanting to kick me and my 2 other friends asses.

When i worked in a casino i really relied on tips to get by but i wouldn't confront people or harass them in any form.

Tips are done by people at their leisure if they want to, if things went their way.

I blame Reservoir Dogs for this whole tip bullshit.

Reservoir Dogs.

Cmon throw in a buck.
-Naw I dont tip.
You dont tip?
-Naw I dont believe in it.
You dont believe in tipping?
You know what these chicks make? They make shit.
-Dont give me that she dont make enough money than she can quit.
I dont even know a fucking Jew whod have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight you dont ever tip?
-I dont tip because society says I have to. All right if someone deserves a tip if they really put forth an effort I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically its for the birds as far as im concerned theyre just doing their job.

I hate when you feel obliged to tip...that pisses me off. But then again ive been on the other side of that, and im sure managers see it like that if theres no tip that means the waiter was fucking around enough to get nothing, which makes Mr. Manager think he needs to fire some asshole who cant take orders right.

I flushed out the feeling of me being the shit
cause I was leaving skid marks on everywhere I sit.
Im not sure how it is there but when I was living in colorado a little while back, I didn't make minimum wage. I made what was called a "service wage" which is less than half of a minimum wage salary. So mine was like... 2.19 or some such nonsense. You are taxed a flat 10% based off of a 10% tip income, if you fall short of that 10% you still get taxed while on the other hand if you make more you still only get taxed the 10%. Most people don't know this, as many states and counties pay servers minimum wage plus the tips.

So this one time a couple servers call out, I'm the only guy on the floor for a night shift at the IHOP and then I'm pulling the graveyard right after. I get a massive group of people coming in from the road to eat, and then after them is a table of three high school kids. The massive group puts in a massive order, as can be expected, and the three guys put in a meager order, with one of them getting just some fries or something.

Naturally in this situation I have to prioritize my time a little bit, the kids are obviously hanging out wasting time, while I got people who have been on the road all day famished. I don't ignore one for the other, but I definitely am trying to get the big group taken care of quickly. Naturally more people come in and things pile up, and I fall behind. The orders of these kids is a little late, one was done wrong by the non english speaker in the back, I get right on it, apologize a ton and tell the guy to hold everything til this one order is made right. I bring it out, its all good.

When almost all the groups are leaving Im cleaning up the tables (cause we didnt have a busboy, we did it ourselves) I find a few tips here and there with the big group despite our having already factored a 15% gratuity in to the check which is standard in colorado for parties over 8. The three kids however left nothing but a pile of sugar in a happy face colored with Tabasco. And the only one of the kids who left any money was the one who ordered only fries and only because he felt bad.

I shimmy on up to the front to see them paying and this one kid is flipping through hundreds before he determines he has nothing smaller. I figure thats the reason. He pays and leaves, as do the other two. I let my manager know and she goes out to ask them if I fucked something up or otherwise pissed them off. They gave a give a shit less attitude because it wasn't their problem, and the service wasn't that good anyway. She asked them never to come back and I took the hit of 10% in my "paycheck" that week despite circumstances beyond my control.

Though its not a standard practice to harass people, sometimes it looks different from the other side. And it's just as likely the guy who talked to you was blowing smoke up your ass in order to not take that hit. Its very likely they gave poor service and he didn't want his manager to be "on to him." Im not saying its not. Just reminded me of that story is all.

Comb yo Beard, I dun Wanna hear that sh*t!
I live in New Zealand and I've never had to tip before. I don't know anyone who does tip or anything, I've certainly never been asked for one.

Our waiters and things in particular must be paid an actual decent amount to get by. Besides, if I had 5 dollars and bought a 5 dollar meal, I'd expect to be able to get it.

Not be harassed about extra money when getting by in life is hard enough as it is.

You get a tip if you deliver quality or kindness. You get a punch in your nose if you deliver a bad time, specially if blocking the exit door.

The waiter's problem, obviously. Not the customer's.

Wow that sucks. I'd tell them that I didn't think that their service was up to par with my expectations, and then walk out. If they try to stop you, just keep walking and don't come back. There's no reason for them to further ruin your experience by embarassing you. =/

"well the future can be scary, but luckily we're always stuck in the present. So it can't be too scary right?"
I've been to that place before, I didn't leave much of a tip. I can't really say the service was that great, nor the food.

You earn a tip, it's not just an addition. If the waiter/tress is not looking after you, then they do not deserve the extra cash.

Simple as that.
