@04:59How do you get the gradients to stay within your line art and only where you want them?

Every time I use the gradient tool it covers the entire layer. Is there a way to contain the gradient within a certain area?

@04:59Uh, I don't understand the question. Draw the shape you want and apply the gradient to that?

@04:59Hmm maybe I'm confused, but when I try to use the gradient tool it doesn't stay within my line art. It covers everything. Do I have to use the lasso tool first to define and area to use the gradient in?

@04:59If you're using Illustrator, no, the lasso tool is only for selecting points.

Try seeing this tutorial, between steps 45 and 48:

Oh ok, I think you are referring to the 'blush'.

If you are using a version older than CS4, its just a normal radial gradiant of pink-white. If you set it to Multiply instead of Normal, you make the white part invisible and the pink semi see-through

If you are using CS4 I think you can now see the opacity for each color stop, so that might be fun to experiment with too.

Hope that helps.

@04:59I use mouse is because tablet confuses me.. I always touch the screen accidentally, and plus if I fold the tablet I wouldn't be able to use the hot keys(I use undo a lot) which slows me down and irritates me.. But tablet is much fun to play with, specially drawing those things that mouse can't do : D

@04:59I have the tablet set beside my keyboard. I had to search for a keyboard that was smaller to let me work semi-comfortably with the tablet on the side. I've suggested it to Wacom - to make a tablet with a built-in keyboard so we can use the shortcut keys more easily. Hopefully they, or someone else, will eventually make something to address the ergonomic issues.

did you use clipping masks on some details? or did you just aligned them anchors to the edge of the body?

:iconsygnin:

Clipping masks, probably. I don't use the auto align function for anything usually, except for centering the sketch on the canvas. Otherwise I manually adjust things most of the time.

@04:59I'm a little clunky with illustrator, so this will be a huge help to me.

One thing that might really complete this is a couple annotations with brief mentions of which tools you're using, so we can look them up. For instance I think you used a mask of some kind for the band around her leg? Or was that pathfinder?

I can do an illustration as this. And at this technique level, but dont with your gorgeous girls...
And NEVER in one hour. Perhaps three at least.

Cool. Yeah and we still have quite different styles, which is good. I've always thought the techniques themselves are not too special, its the way you learn to work with them that makes the difference.

Just the gradient tool. I play with the layer lighting modes for transparency. CS4 is supposed to make that easier to work with I think.
